The European Research Council will use 20 peer review panels to assess applications for its ‘starting grants’ for young researchers. The final carve up, announced on 14 July, will see eight panels dedicated to physical sciences and engineering proposals, seven serving life sciences and five for humanities and social sciences.

Ich finde es richtig, daß die EU einen neuen Schwerpunkt in der Grundlagenforschung setzen will: Gerade die Forschung an den Grenzen des Wissens braucht öffentliche Unterstützung, weil sich private Geldgeber aus der Wirtschaft leider allzuoft erst dann finden lassen, wenn ein Forschungsprojekt halbwegs sichere Renditen verspricht. Erst die Grundlagenforschung jedoch ermöglicht es, neue Wissensfelder zu erschließen, auf denen Ideen wachsen und zu Innovationen reifen können. Wenn es ein Ziel von Forschungsförderung ist, aus Geld Wissen und aus Wissen Geld und Arbeitsplätze zu machen, dann braucht es bei der Grundlagenforschung oft einen besonders langen Atem.

The ERC is breaking the mould for the European Commission by funding frontier research on the basis of excellence, with neither scientific background nor the country where research takes place playing any role in funding decisions. The European Council of Ministers has recently approved a €7.5 billion budget for the ERC. In addition, the ERC's Scientific Council has begun the process of establishing its initial funding stream (for scientists beginning their independent research careers). Both of these events are significant steps towards the realisation of the ERC.
