Strategy

In its first meetings in 2006, the Scientific Council has extensively debated the scientific strategy to be adopted by the ERC, in particular in its start-up phase.

In view of the high expectations of the ERC and the enormous demand for funding, as well as the need to maintain and build momentum in the ERC's development, the Scientific Council agreed that it is imperative that funding starts at the very beginning of the Seventh Research Framework Programme (FP7).

The Scientific Council decided that the ERC funding activities involve two major grant schemes: the ERC Starting Independent Researcher grant scheme (ERC Starting Grants) and the ERC Advanced Investigator grant scheme (ERC Advanced Grants).

It is envisaged that about one third of the ERC's frontier research funding 2007-2013 will be allocated to ERC Starting Grants and two thirds to ERC Advanced Grants.
