The Scientific Council, the ERC's governing body, defines the scientific funding strategy and methodologies. It acts on behalf of the scientific community in Europe to promote creativity and innovative research.
The Scientific Council is composed of eminent scientists and scholars, including some Nobel Prize winners. The members are appointed by the European Commission, on the recommendations of an independent Identification Committee.
The Chair of the Scientific Council is the President of the ERC and the formal representative of the ERC as well as its Scientific Council with the European Commission and other bodies. The President chairs the ERC Board and Scientific Council meetings and prepares the agenda.
The President is assisted by three Vice-Presidents who are equally the Vice-Chairs of the Scientific Council.

Former Presidents and Secretary Generals
Prof. Helga Nowotny took office as ERC President in March 2010 and her mandate ended at the close of 2013. She succeeded the founding ERC President, Prof. Fotis Kafatos, before which she was ERC Vice-President (2007-2010). Prof. Donald Dingwell’s mandate as ERC Secretary General started in September 2010 and ended at the close of 2013. The founding Secretary General was Prof. Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker (Jan 2007-Jun 2009) who was succeeded by Prof. Andreu Mas-Colell (Jul 2009-Aug 2010).
