Sander Thomaes
Professor of psychology

Sander Thomaes is professor of psychology at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He studies how young people, especially teenagers, adapt to our changing society, with special focus on climate change. His research is driven by the assumption that young people are disproportionally vulnerable to climate impacts, but also have unique potential to catalyze the transformative sustainable change that the world needs now. He aims to find science-based solutions to help young people cope with climate change and unleash their potential for sustainable engagement. He is past chair of the Dutch National Research Agenda’s ‘Youth’ domain, and associate editor of Self and Identity. He has written an introduction to psychology book for children.

Prof. Thomaes is PI of the ERC-funded GREENTEENS project, that aims to open up new opportunities to improve sustainability-promoting policy and intervention for young people from around the world. As such, he has special interest in strategies to promote young people’s sustainable consumption.
