The ERC project reporting consists of distinct scientific and periodic (financial) reports that are due at different interim periods. For the final reporting period, the scientific and periodic (financial) reports need to be submitted jointly.
These reports include:
- A narrative part, which in Horizon Europe should be completed using a downloadable Word template (see below), tailored to your specific grant.
- A web-based part, to be completed and submitted directly through the Funding & Tenders Portal.
For more guidance on how to complete the scientific and financial reports, expand the sections below.

Overview
- What do I need to know about the ERC Project Reporting?
In a typical 5-year Horizon Europe ERC project, the interim scientific report is due after month 24, while the financial report is due later, after month 30. The exact reporting periods are outlined in the Grant Agreement. At the end of each reporting period, you will receive a notification via the Funding and Tenders Portal to complete your scientific or financial report in the newly opened module (i.e. “Scientific Reporting” or “Periodic Reporting”).
You will note that part of the information is pre-filled with data that you have previously entered in the “Continuous Reporting” module, such as Publications or Project Summary. You may need to update this information to cover the whole reporting period of your report.
Note that the “Continuous Reporting” module is activated when your project starts and remains active even after the end of the project, allowing you to add additional project results. You are invited to update the “Continuous Reporting” regularly, especially when your project produces important outcomes.
For Horizon Europe projects, besides the online part, you need to download, complete and upload one of the Word templates also available above, applicable for your type of grant (see e.g. the “Scientific Report part B” tab). For final reports, you need to fill in both a scientific and financial report. Once completed, the two parts of the final report must be assembled and re-uploaded as a single PDF document in the Technical Report (Part B) section of the portal.
Once completed, the report must be submitted through the EU Funding & Tenders Portal (Technical guide).
The ERC Executive Agency’s Scientific or Financial Officers will assess your scientific or financial reports and may contact you to request additional information, if they consider something is missing or not clear enough.
For further guidance about what is expected in the scientific or financial reports, please consult the sections below.
Scientific Reporting
- Guidance for Scientific Reporting
The scientific reporting periods are set out in your Grant Agreement. These must be submitted within 60 days after each period ends, and need to capture the following:- In the interim (or mid-term) scientific report, you summarise the scientific progress that allows the Scientific Officers to monitor the implementation of the work and reported achievements against the commitments in your “Description of Action” (part B2 of your project proposal).
- The final report submitted at the end of the project covers scientific and financial aspects. You are asked to report the work carried out and results obtained over the whole duration of your grant, including the scientific and societal impact of your research.
As corresponding Principal Investigator of a Synergy Grant, the scientific reporting is similar to main grants, however with two interim scientific reports after months 24 and 48 of your project. Proof of Concept grantees are asked to submit a single final report at the end of the project.
During the scientific reporting, a typical ERC project needs to provide an overview about the Major Achievements, Major Challenges, Publications, Dissemination activities, etc. The “Scientific Reporting” module of the Funding and Tenders Portal will display the reporting sections you need to complete, which is composed of a narrative part and structured information. Note that the Project Summary is mandatory as will appear for the public on the Cordis website and should be a “stand-alone” text that is not linked to other parts of the report. It should not make reference to confidential or personal information (more information here).
Note that the Horizon Europe scientific report is composed partly of web sections and a downloadable Word template also available in the above grid. The Horizon 2020 scientific reports have to be produced entirely online.
To assist you in preparing the scientific report, we invite you to consult the ERC Scientific Reporting Guidelines.
If you have further questions in relation to your scientific report, we are also happy to support you: ERC-SCIENTIFIC-FOLLOW-UP@ec.europa.eu- In the interim (or mid-term) scientific report, you summarise the scientific progress that allows the Scientific Officers to monitor the implementation of the work and reported achievements against the commitments in your “Description of Action” (part B2 of your project proposal).
Financial Reporting
- Guidance for Financial Reporting
The Periodic financial report covers the financial aspects related to the implementation of your project.
The guidance and links available in this section refer to Horizon Europe ERC grants only. For the financial reporting of Horizon 2020 grants, templates are directly available in the Funding & Tenders Portal.
When does the periodic report need to be submitted? The submission of Periodic reports is due within 60 days from the end of each reporting period. At the end of each reporting period/end of beneficiary participation, you will receive a notification via the Funding & Tenders Portal to complete your Periodic report.
- The Interim Periodic report typically covers the reporting period from Month 1 to Month 30.
- The Final Periodic report typically covers the reporting period from Month 31 to Month 60. This report also applies in case of early grant termination. N. B.: For the final period, you need to submit also the Final Scientific report (“single submission”).
- In case of early termination of a beneficiary’s participation, a periodic report called “Beneficiary Termination report”, needs to be prepared by the terminated beneficiary, and submitted by the coordinator within 60 days from the end date of their participation. For ERC grants, this report is therefore needed when there is a change of Host Institution (with former host leaving the consortium), or in case of termination of an additional beneficiary (in a multi-beneficiary grant).
What are the documents composing the Interim Periodic report / Beneficiary Termination report (“Technical Report (Part B)”)?
- A technical part (“Technical Report (Part B)”) containing a description of the financial aspects related to the implementation of the project during the period of reference (e.g. time commitment, deviations in the use of the resources, …),
- A financial part, for each beneficiary (and affiliated entity, if applicable), consisting of:
- An Individual Financial Statement
- A Consolidated Financial Statement
- A Report on the Use of Resources
- A Certificate on the Financial Statements (CFS), if required (to be downloaded from the Portal and re-uploaded as PDF).
What are the documents composing the Final Periodic report (“Technical Report (Part B)”)?
- A scientific part, containing the description of the scientific progress of the action.
- A technical part, containing the description of the financial aspects related to the implementation of the project during the period of reference (e.g. time commitment, deviations in the use of the resources, …),
- Once completed, the two parts of the Final Periodic Report must be assembled and re-uploaded as a single PDF document on the Technical Report (Part B) screen of the portal.
- A financial part, for each beneficiary (and affiliated entity, if applicable), web based and consisting of:
- An Individual Financial Statement
- A Consolidated Financial Statement
- A Report on the Use of Resources
- A Certificate on the Financial Statements (CFS), if required (to be downloaded from the Portal and re-uploaded as PDF).
Proof of Concept lump sums grants specificities are outlined in the scientific report section.
For more information on how to log in to your project and complete/upload/submit the report, please visit the page IT How-to of the EU Tenders & Funding Portal or the Technical Guide below.- The Interim Periodic report typically covers the reporting period from Month 1 to Month 30.
