Dr Mahamid received an ERC Starting Grant in 2017. Her project brought together two areas of biology: the study of phase-separated assemblies in cell biology and advanced cellular cryo-electron tomography. The aim of her research has been to enhance our understanding of how molecules are organised within the cytoplasm, which is a fundamental and intriguing question. 

The EMBO Gold Medal is awarded annually and recognizes outstanding contributions to the life sciences in Europe by independent group leaders who are under the age of 40. Each winner receives a bursary of 10,000 euro.
