Topical panel: European Science Policy on the move with Robert-Jan Smits (European Commission), Helga Nowotny (European Research Council), Anne Glover (European Commission) and Paul Boyle (U.K. Economic and Social Research Council).
Location: Room 312 (Hynes Convention Center)
European science policy is as dynamic as ever. The new chief scientific advisor position to the European Commission President has been filled. National research councils are becoming more organized with the new Science Europe organization. Bottom-up research is increasingly supported at the European level. A bigger and larger EU research funding program, “Horizon 2020,” will be launched next year from the European Commission. Four high-level experts will be asked to address questions about where European science policy is headed.

Scientific Session: Converging on Climate Change: From Middens to Models, the Savannah to Snæfellsjökull with Helga Nowotny (European Research Council) and three ERC grantees (Brian McKee Chase, Maja Schlüter, Siwan Manon Davies)
Location: Room 208 (Hynes Convention Center)
Three European Research Council (ERC) funded projects demonstrate from very different perspectives how a global challenge such as climate change can be tackled. Essential new insights into this complex topic are gained by unique approaches of data collecting, novel theoretical frameworks, and, above all, the curiosity to push further the borders of our knowledge. Who would expect that rock hyrax middens offer an exceptional resource for understanding climate change across the whole of southern Africa -- a climatically sensitive, but poorly understood, region of the globe -- during the last 50,000 years? And how can formal methods be used to take the dynamics of social-ecological systems into account to achieve a systematic and rigorous assessment of factors determining resilience? Finally, why can tracing microscopic layers of volcanic ash, over much wider geographical regions than previously thought possible, represent the only independent constraint for resolving past events on decadal time-scales? These cutting-edge projects are funded by the ERC. This symposium will highlight original and unexpected approaches, providing multiple, deep perspectives on complex phenomena and challenges facing us today.

Joint Career Workshop: Funding Opportunities in Europe for Creative Minds from Anywhere in the World , ERC / Marie Curie / Euraxess Links US.
Location: Room 209 (Hynes Convention Center)
This workshop for early-career researchers will explain the aim and synergies of two EU funding schemes (Marie Curie Actions and the European Research Council), as well as provide answers to practical questions such as: How can the European Research Council, Marie Curie Actions and EURAXESS support research careers? What are their main features? What are the selection criteria and how long is the selection process? How does the application process work? How many researchers are funded each year? What are the chances of success? Where to find information on the EURAXESS portal? In addition, Marie Curie Fellows and ERC Starting Grantees will be present to share their experiences with these funding initiatives and will answer questions.
