Historically, due to a difference in lifestyles, men were at a higher risk of suffering from a heart attack or stroke than women. While this is no longer the case, obsolete stereotypes and misconceptions mean these conditions in women are often misdiagnosed. ERC grantee Nabila Bouatia-Naji aims to decipher the genetic and molecular causes of two devastating cardiovascular diseases which commonly affect women under 60. Her work could lead to a better understanding of these diseases and to improvements in treatment.

This 8 March, the ERC celebrates the achievements of grantee Dr Mariana Graña, a determined researcher in a branch of physics where women are still noticeably underrepresented. She reflects on how far women have come in Theoretical Physics and what is still needed to overcome the gender-role stereotypes associated with this appealing but abstract field of science.

In order to achieve equal access and participation in science, the United Nations declared 11/2 the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. We took this opportunity to speak with Isabelle Vernos, a member of the ERC’s Scientific Council since 2011 and Chair of the ERC’s Gender Balance Working Group, about what the ERC has done to support female researchers.

Meet fifteen women. Fifteen ERC grantees ready to tell their story in simple words. Based in Spain, they all share a passion for science and one common challenge: taking basic science out of the lab and bringing it closer to citizens, via schools, libraries, museums, and prisons.

There is no easy cure for obesity nowadays, as scientists have an incomplete understanding of what controls body weight. With ERC funding, Dr Lydia Lynch has returned to Europe from the US to work on an entirely new field in the treatment of obesity.

A team of female scientists, including ERC grantee Dr Raffaella Schneider from Sapienza University in Italy found how black holes appeared and grew in the early universe. The lead author of the study was Edwige Pezzulli, a PhD student member of Dr Schneider's ERC-funded team. Supermassive black holes with masses of about a billion times that of the sun existed by about 12.8 billion years ago.
