Mathias Dewatripont

Born in 1959, Mathias Dewatripont is Professor of Economics at ECARES (European Centre for Advanced Research in Economics and Statistics), Université Libre de Bruxelles. He has been part-time Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1998. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University, 1986. His general research area is the economic theory of contracts and incentives, with applications to banking and corporate finance, transition economics, industrial economics and the theory of organizations. He has published widely in these areas in international journals and is the recent co-author (with Patrick Bolton) of the graduate textbook Contract Theory (MIT Press, 2005). Fellow of the Econometric Society (the leading world association of academic economists) since 1993, he was Member of its Council (1999-2002) and one of the three Programme cochairs of its 2000 World Congress. In 2003, he received the Jahnsson Medal, awarded every two years by the Jahnsson Foundation and the European Economic Association to one or two European-based academic economists under the age of 45. This year, he is the President of the European Economic Association, the leading association of academic economists in Europe. Since 1998, he has been Research Director of the Centre for Economic Policy Research, a network of around 700 academic economists based in Europe and North America. Since 2001, he has been a Member of European Commission Presidents R. Prodi and J.M. Barroso’s Group of Economic Policy Analysis.
