After postdoctoral fellowships in France at CEA/Saclay, (1996-1997) and the Observatoire de Paris (1997- 1999), he moved back to the US at Cornell University where he worked on the development of the Infrared Spectrograph of the Spitzer Space Telescope. In 2005, he joined the faculty of the Department of Physics of the University of Crete and since 2014 is a Professor of Observational Astrophysics. Since March 2025 he is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of FORTH.

He has served as the Director of the Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications and Remote Sensing of the National Observatory of Athens (2013-2018) as well as the Director of the Institute of Astrophysics at FORTH and Skinakas Observatory (2019-2025). He was the President of Hellenic Astronomical Society (2020-2024).
