Programme
1. 26-30 Sept, 10:00-21:00, ERC=Science² demo tent at Lõunakeskus (Ringtee Street 75, Tartu)
Workshops on the making of LED lanterns, 3D glasses, virtual reality glasses and holograms organised by Science Centre AHHAA.
The workshop on LED lanterns will help participants to find out how lamps have changed throughout the years and get acquainted with the newest trends in illumination industry, i.e. the light-emitting diode (or LED). The workshop on 3D glasses will provide explanations for the technology behind 3D technology, including stereoscopics and 3D effects seen in the movies while also enabling all the participants to make their own 3D glasses. The workshop on virtual reality glasses will give the workshop-goers an unprecedented VR experience as participants will be able to build functional VR glasses from cardboard that can be used with their smartphones. During the workshop all the participants will get to know how VR glasses work and what their future perspectives are. The workshop on holograms gives an overview of how holograms work, explains simply physics behind interference and diffraction. And moreover it introduces all possible future applications of it, such as data storage, security and usage in electronic products, etc.
The workshops will be carried out throughout the day. In the mornings, from 10-14:00, the workshops will be reserved for pre-booked school groups and from 14-20:00 the workshops will be open for everybody visiting Lõunakeskus/ERC=Science² demo tent.
2. 29 Sept, 18:00-20:00, Science café, Apollo bookshop at Lõunakeskus (Ringtee Street 75, Tartu)
The aim of this science café is to present a side of plant physiology that many people are unaware of. ERC grantee Ülo Niinemets, a professor of agriculture and environmental sciences from the Estonian University of Life Sciences, will talk about the stress-dependent emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) that are emitted by plants. Read here ERC story about Prof. Ülo Niinemets' project.
3. 30 sept, 18:00-23:00, Open lab visit to ERC grantee Ülo Niinemets at the Estonian University of Life Sciences (Tartu)
Professor Üle Niinemets will open his lab located in the Estonian University of Life Sciences to talk about his ERC-funded research.
In addition, the Estonian University of Life Sciences will open several of its other labs to the public at the same time.
