Prof. Norbert Kroo, Physicist. Main activities in condensed matter research and optics: neutron scattering in solids and liquids, the interaction of laser light with matter, the development of new types of lasers and their application in research, technology, metrology and medicine. Near field microscopy and plasmonics. Professor of the Roland Eötvös University, Budapest and the Technical University Budapest. Founding director of the Research Institute for Solid State Physics and Optics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (1981-1998), Secretary General (1999-2005) and Vice President (2005- ) of this Academy. Numerous prizes and honours both on national and international levels (The Middle Cross with the Star of the Hungarian Republic (H), Humboldt Prize (D), Pazmany Gyulai and Academy Prizes (H) Golden Ring of the President (H), the highest prize of the Czech Academy of Sciences, etc.), Honorary Doctor of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna, Russia), Wallis E. Lamb Award for Laser Physics and Quantum Electronics (USA), Commander of the Order of the Lion (Finland). Member of the Governing Council of ESF, Council of Academia Europaea, EURAB. Member of several academies (Hungarian and other) and honorary doctor of several universities (H and abroad). Member of the High Level Expert Group on Digital Libraries of the EC (2006-2010). Chair of the Research Infrastructure Expert Group of the EC (2007- ). Chair of the Hungarian Research Infrastructure Governing Council (2008- ).
