Head of Unit for Intelligence Gathering, Analysis and Innovation at Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA)

Cornelius Schmaltz is currently a Senior Expert in the office of the Deputy Head of HERA after having led the Unit “Intelligence Gathering, Analysis and Innnovation” at the European Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) until the end of 2025. Since 2006 he has held various positions at the European Commission in the area of health research and innovation and from 2019-2024 as Head of the Accelerator unit at the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA). Cornelius received his MD and his training as a board-certified paediatrician from the University of Freiburg/Germany. Following a postdoc at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, he joined the Volkswagen Foundation in Germany, as programme manager in Medicine. Cornelius also holds an M.A. in International Relations from the Free University in Berlin and is the co-author of several original papers in peer-reviewed journals, including Nature Medicine and Nature Genetics.
