Fiona Kernan, with a B.Sc. in biochemistry from University College Dublin, and a Ph.D. in molecular genetics from Trinity College Dublin, began her career as a trainee with the European Commission’s Directorate for Research and Innovation in 2005. She then moved to the European Science Foundation (ESF) in Strasbourg, France – an organisation representing research performing and research funding bodies across Europe. Dr. Kernan worked as a scientific officer in the unit supporting the Standing Committee of the European Medical Research Councils (EMRC), and for a 7th Framework Programme (FP7) funded project managed by the ESF. Dr. Kernan joined the European Research Council Executive Agency as a research programme officer in 2009. During her time at the ERCEA, she has worked with Advanced Grant and Synergy Grant evaluation panels, coordinated the ERC Starting Grant and Consolidator Grant calls, and is currently the Head of Sector for Fundamental Life Sciences and Health in the Life Sciences Unit.
