An Martel (PhD) is a veterinary specialist in wildlife population health, with a strong interest in nature and infectious diseases in wild animals.  She is a Full Research professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Ghent University (Belgium) and co-PI of the Wildlife Health Ghent (WHG) research group. WHG aims to understand the interactions between host, pathogen and environment with a clear link to management and policy. The research focus lies on emerging infectious diseases with a negative impact on wildlife health. The combination of a veterinary (clinical) background and facilities, with extensive microbiological and pathological expertise, has led to the discovery of several wildlife pathogens and a prominent role in the wildlife disease scientific community.

With the help of the ERC Advanced grant GLOSSI, An aims to study the contribution of the skin glycosylation pattern towards the development of resistance in European salamanders against the Bsal epidemic.
