“Operational Earth Observation at the interface between science and technology”

As Chief Scientist at EUMETSAT, Dr. Ruti provides strategic advice to the Director-General. He is responsible for designing and implementing user requirements analysis for future satellite missions, representing EUMETSAT in high-level context, and implementing foresight functions - evaluating opportunities to match emerging user’s needs within the field of Earth observations.

Dr. Ruti was the former Head of the World Weather Research Division at the WMO. He was responsible for the design and implementation of inter-disciplinary research and innovation programs across geophysical and social sciences to foster Earth system prediction. A further responsibility was strengthening the role of science in decision-making through collaboration with co-sponsored programmes (i.e., World Climate Research Programme, Global Climate Observing System), international prediction centers (i.e., ECMWF, NOAA, CMA), science foundations and UN organisations (i.e., NSF, EU, UNESCO, UNEP) and WMO member countries.

He holds a Ph.D. in geophysics from the University of Torino and Genova, Physics Department, and a Degree in physics from the University of Bologna. He has internationally recognized expertise on Earth system science, climate change, climate services, and regional climate processes. He is the author and co-author of more than 70 peer reviewed papers.
