11 June 2026
The EMBO Gold Medal 2026 has been awarded to ERC grantee Gautam Dey, Group Leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, and to Omaya Dudin, University of Geneva, Switzerland, for their contributions to understanding the evolutionary origins of cellular organisation and multicellularity.
Embo Gold Medal winner

Professor Dey received an ERC Starting Grant in 2023 to investigate how key cellular processes evolved across eukaryotes. His work uses comparative cell biology, experimental evolution and genomics in microbial systems to investigate how mitosis and nuclear remodelling have diversified during evolution.

The EMBO Gold Medal recognises researchers in the early stages of their independent careers for outstanding contributions to the life sciences in Europe. The award includes a gold medal and a €10,000 bursary.
